Contemporary In-Frame 'Railings' Kitchen - Farnham, Surrey

Our clients in Seale, near Farnham, wanted to extend their beautiful Georgian property to create a large open living space for cooking, entertaining and dining. The brief was to create a contemporary feel in the kitchen with plenty of natural light streaming in from wide bi-folding doors and windows while, at the same time, blending seamlessly with the overall aesthetic of their period property. As furniture designers, we were excited to take on the challenge of mixing old and new styles to create an eclectic mix of furniture.

We combined the classic in-frame shaker design with a modern, handleless approach to achieve the desired look. Our aim was to steer away from a very modern, slick appearance while avoiding a traditional shaker look.

We placed the Lacanché cooker at the centre of attention on the back wall between two windows. To maximise the island's functionality, we installed the sink, ensuring it had ample serving space, seating and storage. We didn't want the tall cabinets to overpower the room, so we strategically placed the fridge in a position that didn't obstruct the view from the table to the kitchen or interfere with the flow of light. To create more storage, we chose a bi-fold dresser design on the same side as the fridge freezer. With this design, the doors could fold and slide fully back into the cabinet to prevent any obstruction. The cabinets on both sides of the Lacanché were perfect for storing everyday items used for cooking. We also had extra storage space in the utility room next to the kitchen to store the "back kitchen" items.

Combining clean lines and shaker panelling creates a beautiful look in this space. The contrast between the strong and dark colour of Farrow & Ball Railings and the light marble quartz worktop works really well. The stepped cornice finish adds a nod to Art Deco style, making it an eclectic and unique room for dining, entertaining, and relaxing.

We thoroughly enjoyed working on this project. The result was a beautiful blend of styles that perfectly suited our clients' needs.
