Barn Conversion In-Frame Kitchen - Petworth

Updated: Jul 20

Luxury Bespoke Kitchen Near Billingshurst | Kirdford Barn Conversion

From the moment you walk into our client's converted barn in Petworth your eye is drawn upwards. The original oak frame stretches the full height of the building, the vaulted ceiling creates an incredible sense of space, and a glazed mezzanine floats effortlessly above the kitchen.

As part of the refurbishment, the kitchen was relocated to one end of the barn, completely changing how the building is used. The mezzanine, introduced during the renovation, allowed the pantry and utility room to be cleverly concealed beneath it, accessed from either side of the main kitchen.

Standing at the island, the first thing you notice isn't the cabinetry at all. It's the scale of the room. The exposed oak frame remains uninterrupted, the views stretch through the building, and the kitchen feels comfortably settled within the architecture rather than competing with it. The handcrafted in-frame cabinetry was chosen to suit the character of the barn. Its traditional construction sits comfortably alongside the original oak frame. Finished in Paint & Paper Library's Stone V, keeps the cabinetry light and understated, while the island, painted in Little Greene's Invisible Green, introduces a richer focal point that grounds the centre of the room. The bronze Barrington handles from Hendel & Hendel add another layer of warmth and texture, sitting naturally alongside the aged oak timbers.

One of our favourite details is the cooking area. Rather than allowing the range cooker to dominate the room, it's recessed into the wall beneath a simple mantel, with an antique mirror splashback reflecting both light and the beautiful timber frame beyond. Opposite, the integrated refrigeration has also been recessed into the wall, keeping the elevations calm and uninterrupted.

It's these quieter design decisions that give the kitchen such a timeless feel.

The generous island, topped in 30mm Taj Mahal quartz, naturally becomes the place where everyone gathers. With seating for family and friends, it works just as well for a relaxed breakfast as it does for entertaining, while the pantry and utility quietly deal with everything that doesn't need to be on show.

Although this is our client's country home, and they spend much of their time in London, it has all the qualities of a home designed to be lived in properly. A place for long weekends, family visits and slowing down.
