Bespoke Country Kitchen for a Farmhouse Cottage - Graffham, Petworth
This farmhouse cottage in Graffham, near Petworth, has been extensively remodelled and extended to create a generous new kitchen and living space designed around a busy family – and the dogs, horses and muddy boots that come with country life.
The handmade kitchen now opens into a large dining and seating area, with doors leading directly onto a new patio and plenty of natural light from the windows running along the rear of the house. Rather than creating separate spaces, the new layout brings cooking, eating and relaxing together in one large family room.
The kitchen itself is traditionally specified, with bespoke in-frame cabinetry, exposed brushed nickel hinges and a combination of cup handles and knobs. The main cabinetry is hand-painted in Farrow & Ball Oxford Stone, creating a warm, understated backdrop to the room.
At the centre sits a large island, made from ash and stained in Vintage Oak. The natural wood brings warmth, contrast and texture to the painted cabinetry and helps to anchor the kitchen within such a generous space. The hob is positioned here for convenience, alongside plenty of preparation space and storage, with an undercounter wine fridge neatly incorporated at one end and seating along the other side.
The AGA provides the traditional focal point of the kitchen. A faux chimney breast was created to frame it, concealing the extractor above, while patterned Mandarin Stone tiles form the splashback behind. Skirting was continued around the cabinetry either side, helping it feel properly built into the room.
Storage was planned around the way the family uses the kitchen every day. A large bi-fold breakfast cabinet keeps the microwave, toaster, coffee machine and breakfast essentials together and easily accessible, while allowing everything to be hidden away when the doors are closed. A Fisher & Paykel fridge sits within the tall cabinetry, and on the sink run a recessed plinth beneath the dishwasher is a small but practical detail that makes loading and unloading more comfortable.
The adjoining boot room and utility has its own identity, with cabinetry finished in Farrow & Ball Pigeon. Designed very much with country family life in mind, it includes full-height storage, a long run of hooks, open shelving and seating, with plenty of room for coats, riding gear, shoes and boots. Tall cupboards incorporate angled shoe shelves, while a sink provides a practical place for cleaning muddy boots and paws.
The washing machine and tumble dryer are both located upstairs, closer to where the family's laundry is generated, leaving the downstairs utility free for the things that genuinely need to happen here. The opening between this space and the kitchen also occupies the position of the original kitchen window, neatly incorporating part of the old cottage into the remodelled layout.
The result is a light, generous family kitchen that feels completely at home within the original farmhouse cottage, creating a practical and beautiful space.
