Contemporary Bespoke Kitchen - 1930s Haslemere Home

Contemporary Bespoke Kitchen in a 1930s Haslemere Home

Contemporary Bespoke Kitchen in a 1930s Haslemere Home

This contemporary kitchen sits at the centre of a full renovation to a 1930s house in Haslemere. From the beginning, it was designed to be a defining feature of the house rather than something that blended quietly into it. Keith and his partner Sarah undertook the project with a clear sense of ambition. Keith completed much of the building work himself, the space feels deliberate, confident and unapologetically bold.

The room is large and filled with light. Rooflights pull the daylight in to the room, while the connection to the garden keeps the space open and expansive. At the centre sits a substantial island, positioned to organise the space and draw everything towards it.

The cabinetry that frames the space is finished in a cement putty rendered MDF. The tone is neutral, but it has weight and texture, and holds its own against the stronger elements in the room rather than stepping aside.

In contrast, the island and sink run are finished in midnight blue, treated with an anti-fingerprint coating for everyday use. The colour gives the island weight and focus, and combined with its scale, it becomes the visual anchor for the room.

A 50mm built-up mitred porcelain worktop wraps the island and perimeter units. Thick and veined, it pulls together the tones running through the cabinetry - the softness of the cement putty, the depth of the blue and the warmth of the copper details - giving the kitchen a strong sense of cohesion despite its scale.

Copper detailing runs through the kitchen and into the lighting. Five rose copper pendant lights hang above the island, their tone echoed in the handleless rails, the slim bar handles on the tall cabinetry and the rose copper Quooker tap at the sink. Together, these elements bring warmth to the space and help tie the palette together.

An open bookcase with a glass shelf breaks up the run of tall units and introduces space for display. The larder opens to reveal walnut bottle racks, mirrored panels and PIR lighting, adding depth and interest without disrupting the overall flow of the kitchen.

Inside the drawers, glass-sided pan drawers sit alongside stainless steel drawer boxes, giving everything a robust, well-finished feel. Miele appliances are integrated into the tall cabinetry, allowing the cabinetry either side to take centre stage. The Elica gas venting hob sits within the island, keeping the space above visually clear and uninterrupted.

As the heart of a carefully executed renovation, this contemporary kitchen makes no attempt to hold back. It’s bold, it’s dramatic, and it’s designed to be lived in fully.
