A Bespoke Dix Blue Kitchen and Utility Room in Haslemere, Surrey

For this mid-century home in Haslemere, the brief was to design a bespoke kitchen and utility room that would bring together traditional craftsmanship, considered detailing and the practical requirements of modern family life.
The project began with a reconfiguration of the ground floor, opening up the original kitchen into the adjoining living room to create a generous, open-plan kitchen and dining space. The original kitchen doorway was also blocked up, providing valuable additional wall space for a bespoke larder cupboard.
The kitchen cabinetry is finished in Farrow & Ball's Dix Blue, a beautifully soft blue-green that works particularly well alongside the warmth of the wood-effect Karndean flooring and the crisp white worktops. Traditional brass cup handles and knobs from Hendel & Hendel complement the colour, adding a subtle richness to the overall scheme.
The lay-on cabinetry features solid ash doors with an ovalo moulding set within the recessed panels. The natural grain of the ash remains visible beneath the painted finish, bringing texture and depth to the cabinetry and allowing the light to play across the surface. It is a detail that gives the kitchen its distinctive character and reflects the craftsmanship that goes into each of our bespoke designs.
A traditional-style mantle canopy provides an elegant focal point to the cooking area, discreetly housing a Siemens integrated extractor above the Siemens induction hob. Open corner shelving offers a lighter contrast to the surrounding cabinetry, providing space for decorative pieces without interrupting the clean lines of the kitchen.
Storage has been carefully considered throughout, with a particular highlight being the full-height larder cupboard. Opening the painted doors reveals a beautifully crafted oak interior, complete with shelving, door-mounted storage and deep drawers. The warmth of the natural oak provides a pleasing contrast to the painted exterior, while the arrangement ensures that everyday ingredients and kitchen essentials are neatly organised and easily accessible.
Beneath the kitchen window, an undermounted stainless steel sink sits within the white worktop, making the most of the natural light and views outside. The adjoining breakfast bar provides a relaxed place to sit, bringing a sociable element to the kitchen and creating a natural connection with the dining and living areas beyond.
The adjoining utility and boot room was designed as an extension of the kitchen, with the same Dix Blue cabinetry, lay-on doors and brass hardware carried through for a cohesive finish.
Here, practical storage and laundry facilities sit alongside more traditional boot room detailing. A Belfast sink is set into the worktop, with fitted cupboards and open shelving providing space for everyday household essentials. Along the opposite wall, an oak bench seat and matching shelf are paired with tongue-and-groove panelling and brass coat hooks, creating a welcoming and practical space for coats, shoes and outdoor belongings.
The oak detailing brings a natural warmth to the utility room, while the continuation of the Karndean flooring helps to connect the two spaces.
The result is a kitchen that feels entirely at home within its mid-century setting, Combining traditional joinery with a fresh, contemporary approach to colour and layout. By reconsidering the original floor plan and making the most of the available space, we have created a kitchen that is as practical as it is beautiful, with bespoke cabinetry and carefully chosen materials that will stand the test of time.
